At some point you have probably heard the phrase, “You can’t please everyone”. Let’s face it, every person will always have an opinion, right and wrong can often be subjective, we are all the unique product of our own experiences, and we all share different values and beliefs. If that isn’t enough, there’s also always somebody having a bad day!
Having high expectations, being a lovely person and wanting those around you to be happy is admirable. But unless you want your happiness, enthusiasm and energy sucking out of you, you absolutely should stop trying so hard:
- Learn how to say no – Be firm but polite, start small and work your way up.
- Ask for what you want – Speak up! Voice your opinions and get what you want sometimes. Your opinion does matter.
- Do things for yourself – Do something you want to do without worrying what others think.
What can you do if you you’re talking to a person who is a missile-seeking target? Socrates was executed on the basis of not giving in to his own beliefs. Ok, so maybe that’s a little drastic. Perspective, courtesy, gentility, consideration and patience go a long way without you sacrificing your own beliefs and intentions.
Stay true to yourself; as long as you’re doing the right things with a good heart, that’s all that really matters.
